Exchange Labs & Outlook Live

Microsoft Exchange LabsRockhurst University has teamed up with Microsoft to provide students with a better email experience. On Monday, February 16, 2009, Computer Services will migrate all student email accounts to the Microsoft Exchange Labs/Outlook Live service, giving you vastly expanded storage. Currently students are limited to 30MB mailboxes. After the transition that limit will be expanded to 10GB. You will also be able to keep your new email address forever, rather than having it deleted after you graduate.

After this transition, your email address will change from YourUsername@rockhurst.edu to YourUsername@hawks.rockhurst.edu. We will automatically forward any new emails that are sent to your old address between February 16, 2009 and June 1, 2009. If you have messages stored in your old account you would like to keep, you will need to save them before June 1. At this point your old account and forward will be deleted.

What's my new e-mail address?
Your new e-mail address is YourUsername@hawks.rockhurst.edu. Your current email address @rockhurst.edu will forward to your new address until June 1, 2009, at which point the old address and the forward will be terminated.

How do I access my new email account?
You can go to http://email.hawks.rockhurst.edu. Before you can access your account for the first time, you will need to change your password from a Rockhurst computer or through our Password Reset system, this will allow your Rockhurst password to be synchronized to your new email account. The first time you access the service you will need to register some details with Microsoft.

Please note, your Windows Live ID (username) for Exchange Labs is your full "YourUsername@hawks.rockhurst.edu" email, not just "YourUsername" as was the case with the previous system.

Where are my old emails?
Once your new Exchange Labs/Outlook Live email account is available you will still be able to access your old email account at http://email.rockhurst.edu, however you will no longer receive mail to this account. This account will only be accessible through June 1, 2009, at which point all of the contents will be deleted and the forward from your old address will be terminated.

How do I change my password?
You can change your password from any Rockhurst computer or visit the Help site at http://help.rockhurst.edu and click Password/PIN Reset at the top of the page. Your password will be synchronized to your Exchange Labs/Outlook Live mailbox. For more information on password restrictions or requirements see the Passwords & Accounts section of the Help site. You should avoid changing your password from within the Exchange Labs/Outlook Live interface.

How long has Computer Services been planning this?
We have been planning to make significant upgrades to student email for a couple years. We evaluated other options such as upgrading our on-premise systems as well as migrating student email to hosted solutions such as Microsoft Hotmail and Google Gmail. We selected Exchange Labs/Outlook Live because of the similarities with the existing Exchange features we offer our students as well as other exciting features no one else is able to provide but Microsoft.

What kind of testing has been done with this project?
Computer Services has partnered with Student Senate, since October 2008, in testing this rollout. The senators have been using Exchange Labs/Outlook Live as their daily student email and have been providing feedback to our department on how we can make the system work better and provide a smooth rollout to the entire campus.
