Both our employee and student mail systems are fully compatible with Exchange ActiveSync. This allows you to receive your Rockhurst mail, contacts, calendar on your mobile phone or PDA through your cellular provider's data network or a wifi connection. In addition, users should receive messages on their phones or PDAs almost as soon as they arrive on our servers through "direct push" technology. This is similar to how one receives text-messages on phones, except without any per message fees.
Requirements
Because there are many different implementations of Exchange ActiveSync on different devices, we cannot insure that our servers will work with every device. However, we have verified that our mail system works with the following phones and mobile operating systems: (ranked in order of compatibility)
- Microsoft Windows Mobile smartphones and PDAs running version 5.0 or higher. You can verify your version by going to "Start" then "Settings," clicking on the "System" tab and then the About icon. Since Windows Mobile is designed to run on many different devices, we cannot list all of them, but most of them have no problems with our setup. A great list of Windows Mobile phones can be found on the Microsoft website.
- Apple iOS platform, such as the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, running at least firmware 2.0. To find out what version your device is running, click on "Settings" from the home screen then "General" and then "About." The firmware will be shown under "Version." You can also connect your device to your computer and use iTunes to find out if there are updates avaliable for your device. We suggest all users be on at least version 3.1.3 for best performance and security.
- Palm WebOS platform devices such as the Pre or Pixi. Support for this option is very limited and users are encouraged to contact their cellular provider with any questions on attaching to our system.
- Google Android devices such as the Nexus One, T-Mobile G1 or myTouch, Motorola Droid or HTC Hero. Support for this option is very limited and users are encouraged to contact their celluar provider with any questions on attaching to our system.
At this time, Rockhurst will provide no support for Blackberry phones. We cannot connect them to our mail servers since their devices require an additional infrastructure and a paid service which Rockhurst does not utilize.
Other Requirements
- We recommend purchasing a data plan from your cellular provider before attempting to synchronize your device with our servers. Rockhurst is not responsible for any additional charges you may incur as a result of your use of this service. Users are encouraged to verify their contact with their provider if there is any doubt.
- Because your phone will constantly synchronize with our servers using your data connection, you may see a very small reduction in the daily battery duration of your device, and a need to recharge more frequently. However this reduction should not impact normal usage.
