Mobile Mail

Rockhurst's mail servers are fully compatible with Exchange ActiveSync. This allows you to receive your Rockhurst mail, contacts, calendar and tasks on your mobile phone or PDA through your cellular providers data network or a third-party wifi connection. In addition, users should receive messages on your phone or PDA almost as soon as they arrive on our servers through "direct push" technology. This is similar to how one receives text-messages on phones, except without any per message fees.

Requirements

Because there are many different implementations of Exchange ActiveSync on different devices, we cannot insure that our servers will work with every device. However, we have verified that our mail system works with the following phones and mobile operating systems:

  • Any phone or PDA running Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher. You can verify your version by going to "Start" then "Settings" clicking on the "System" tab and then the About icon. Popular phones in this category include the AT&T Tilt, Palm Treo 700w/700wx/750/800w, Motorola Q/Q9 and Samsung Blackjack. There are many other devices that run this OS and so we cannot list all of them, most of which have no problems with our setup.
  • Apple iPhone or iPod Touch, running at least firmware 2.0. Previous versions of the iPhone firmware (1.0 through 1.1.14) are capable of syncing with our servers but not through ActiveSync (it uses IMAP instead). We do not recommend this method because it passes your Rockhurst network credentials in plain-text which could expose your account to hackers. To find out what version your iPhone or iPod Touch is running, click on "Settings" from the home screen then "General" and then "About." The firmware will be shown under "Version."
  • Palm OS smartphones and PDAs running VersaMail 3.5 or higher. Popular phones in this category include the Palm Treo 680/755p and Palm Centro. Support for this option is very limited and users are encouraged to contact their cellular provider with any questions.

At this time, Rockhurst does not support Blackberry phones and can provide no assistance in connecting them to our mail servers. Blackberry requires an additional infrastructure and a paid service which Rockhurst does not utilize.

Other Requirements

  • We recommend purchasing a data plan from your cellular provider before attempting to synchronize your device with our servers. Rockhurst is not responsible for any additional charges you may incur as a result of your use of this service. Users are encouraged to verify their contact with their provider if there is any doubt.
  • Because your phone will constantly synchronize with our servers, you may see a reduction in your daily battery life and a need to recharge more frequently.

Setting up your device

Because every operating system is different, at the present time we do not have a tutorial for each type.

Using the instructions provided with your device, program your phone/PDA to connect to the following Exchange ActiveSync server:

email.rockhurst.edu

Your username and password will be the same one you use to login to the computers on campus, or to Outlook Web Access. Typically your username is in the format of:

LastnameF

If prompted for a "domain" by your device enter (not all devices will ask for this):

rockhurst

You may be prompted to enter your email address into the device, make sure that you enter it in the proper format:

LastnameF@rockhurst.edu (for students)
Firstname.Lastname@rockhurst.edu (for staff/faculty)
