A popular activity on Facebook right now is to post 25 things about yourself and then tag 25 of your friends in the hope that they do it too. Well, we decided to get in on the action. Those of you who are friends with our profile can read and comment to our post on Facebook, but for those of you who are not, we've decided to publish them here as well. Some are serious, some are humorous, and its all done in good fun.
- We hate Cisco Clean Access just as much as the rest of you, if not more, but it is a necessary evil that keeps the network secure and operational.
- We love it when people bring us treats after we've fixed their computer, helped them setup for an event or generally just done our jobs. Remember, the way to a geeks heart is through his stomach. Cookies are good, not that we're picky.
- We use all sorts of different technologies, Windows, Apple, Linux, etc and can generally find someone to fix your problem for you... given enough time.
- We update our website often, http://help.rockhurst.edu -- if you can check here before calling us you may save yourself a lot of time and frustration.
- We used to be in the basement of Conway, before it was renovated. Now we hang out up on the 4th floor.
- We're responsible for 800+ faculty, staff & student workstations/thin clients.
- We have our own datacenter, in Conway Hall, that has 50+ servers running a collection of operating systems like Windows Server, Linux, and OpenVMS. There are only about 10 people on campus who can get inside it without an escort. It has a gas fire supression system (like you see in the movies) and a dedicated power system, so if the campus has power problems we can stay online until its back up. It also has its own temp control system that keep the room at about 70 degrees and 35% humidity. It's loud. If you ask us nice, we may let you see it.
- Outside of computers, our hobbies include working on cars, photography, hockey, and building historical models. Just to name a few.
- There are four people in the department named Mike. Two named Mary. One Matt, one Martin. We know it's confusing, but we like names that start with M.
- We really don't try and make things difficult for you, so please be patient with us when we're trying to fix a problem. They happen, that's why we're here.
- If you need help with buying a computer or software, just ask us, we're always good for free advice. We may even be able to get you some nice discounts.
- There are about 4500 of you, 18 of us. We try as hard as we can to get to everyone quickly, but we feel bad that we can't always do that.
- We play a lot of Halo 3. Actually, we play a lot of video games in general. Anytime you want to play with us, let us know.
- We think the redesign of Office 2007 is stupid too, we can't find anything either.
- We love our iPhones.
- Did we mention doughnuts? They're fantastic as well, remember, there are 18 of us... shop accordingly.
- We're all pretty much addicted to Chick-fl-a. We're working on getting one built on campus. So far, not having much luck.
- We know when you're downloading music and movies you don't own. Please don't do that, it saves us a lot of work and can save you a lot of money in fines from guys like RIAA, MPAA, etc. There are plenty of legal alternatives like iTunes, Zune Marketplace, Napster, etc.
- We have to change our passwords every 90 days too, so no, you can't be exempt.
- Speaking of passwords, please don't give yours to anyone, even your friends or co-workers. Don't write down your password and tape it to the bottom of your office keyboard either.
- Also, we will never ask you for your password, social security number, or any other sensitive information in an email. You should never send that information to anyone in an email, it's not secure.
- There are some things we just can't figure out either, so when you have to call us because you don't know how to do something, don't feel bad. Likewise, when we have to do some research on your problem because we don't know, please be patient.
- Not to beat a dead horse here, but we also like pie. If we fix your computer, and you bring us pie, we'll fix it again for free!
- Oh, yeah... we never charge to fix your computer. If you don't bring us pies, cookies or doughnuts, a simple "thank you" will work too.
