Addressing issues with WebCT this semester

We are aware that many faculty and students are having issues getting into WebCT and using WebCT this semester.  We wanted to address those issues to give you an update as to why we have been having so many problems and also what we are doing to resolve them.

  1. One of the main issues comes from the fact that we are running two versions of WebCT this semester. We are running WebCT 4 (https://webct.rockhurst.edu) and we are also running WebCT 8 (https://webct8.rockhurst.edu).  (Note: Starting next semester we will only be running WebCT 8)

Each version is on its own server and has its own web address. This semester each faculty member chose if they wanted their course in WebCT 8 or WebCT 4. We would like to ask each faculty member using either version of WebCT, to please notify your students which version and web address they need to access your course.  We would also ask students that if they do not see their course in the version of WebCt that they are logged into, that they should try the other version.

  2. The second issue pertains to only WebCT8 courses.  There are many people that prefer Firefox over Internet Explorer as their web browser.  Unfortunately the latest version of Firefox (version 3.5) has not been fully tested by WebCT. Therefore, if you are using Firefox 3.5 you will receive warning messages that the browser is incompatible.

As a result of this browser check failure you may also experience slow performance within WebCT8, issues with Java, and even the inability to login. We highly recommend that you use Internet Explorer for accessing your WebCT 8 courses until we get the approval from WebCT that Firefox 3.5 is fully supported. At that time, we will notify the campus that it is again available to use.  We don’t anticipate that this will take very long.

Here is a link to all the currently supported browsers with WebCT 8.0: http://kb.blackboard.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=25368512

  3. You MUST have the latest version of Java installed to use WebCT 8.0.  You can download the latest version here:  http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp
  4. Who do I contact if I still have issues?  Please contact Byron Gorman at 816-501-4799, or Byron.Gorman@Rockhurst.edu
Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work through this difficult but necessary transition.
