Unattended workstations, if not properly secured, can leave sensitive data including email, student records, tests, financial information or personal information open to anyone who has physical access to a machine, lawful or otherwise. Users are legally responsible for all activities associated with their network account and should take great care in protecting the access to the resources they have access to.
If you feel that your network account or workstation has been compromised or if you suspect that your office or computer system has been tampered with, contact Computer Services immediately so that we can investigate.
RUCS requires the use of screen savers that automatically lock the workstation after activation.
Users have the ability to select and customize their own screen saver, as well as change the time period before the screen saver activates. However, they must select a time period of 30 minutes or less. While we recommenced that users select a time frame of 10 minutes or less, we understand that not everyone has the same preferences and we want to accommodate as many different types of conditions as possible.
If a user's current settings do not fit within the guidelines of this profile, they will reset to the Windows defaults the next time the user is
logged to their system. If the user's settings already meet these requirements
no changes will be made to their customizations.
Users are encouraged to manually lock their workstations when they walk away, even if they are leaving their system in a locked office. To do this press the Windows Logo Key + L or CTRL + ALT + DEL and then select Lock Workstation.
Users are encouraged to log out of their machines at the end of the day and to shut them off over the weekend or during vacation periods. This will also help conserve energy.
Users in our labs will continue to automatically log out users 10 minutes of inactivity. Users will receive 30 seconds to cancel the automatic log out and remain logged in if needed.
The only exception to this are teacher stations which we have modified to allow faculty users to remain logged in indefinitely. This should aid instructors giving presentations and prevent disruptions during class. Users should make sure to manually log out of these machine when they are done working on them.
