Office 2007 Service Pack 1 rollout

RUCS has rolled out Office 2007 Service Pack 1 to systems on campus. This update will be delivered through the regular Windows Updates system and will require you to restart your computer to complete. Service Pack 1 contains numerous bug fixes and additional features.

More information on SP1 can be found at the Microsoft website on article KB936982.

Campus-wide power fluctuation

Power on campus fluctuated at approximately 10:50AM. Redundant power supplies in our network operations center prevented servers from going offline, but networking equipment and workstations in other buildings on campus may have been affected. Please contact RUCS immediately to report lack of connectivity or issues with your system related to these power issues.

If your building is having still having general power issues please contact the Physical Plant operator at (816) 501-4566.

Additional XL wireless issues resolved

We believe we have corrected remaining issues in the Xavier-Loyola residence halls that were continuing to affect user's wireless Internet, mostly in the 1st floor of the east wing. We apologize for the length of time that users were without connection, but our network team was unaware of the issues until today.

RUCS is committed to providing reliable and secure Internet access to all our students. If at any time you are having issues connecting to the network please contact us. You can submit a service request from another computer. Please be sure to include your room number and a phone number you can be reached at in the request.

WebCT downtime on 2/11/08

WebCT services were offline today for approximately 40 minutes, starting around 9:00 AM. These problems were due to a server misconfiguration. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. We believe the issue has been corrected and should not happen again.

If any issues accessing the system continue please contact us immediately.

RUCS begins extensive application deployments

Silverlight Installer WindowRUCS has begun a new process of updating the software on campus computers and as a result you may notice when turning on or restarting your computer that you must wait for applications to be installed before you can login to your computer. This is being done to both increase network security by patching vulnerabilities and to increase the functionality of our systems by enabling new features.

Some of the software you may notice being installed include:

  • Microsoft Silverlight, which is a multimedia plugin for viewing Internet content.
  • Microsoft ActiveSync to allow you to connect Windows Mobile PDAs & Smartphones to your computer.
  • Updated versions of Mozilla Firefox, Java and QuickTime.

If you have any questions about this process, please feel free to contact the Helpdesk at helpdesk@rockhurst.edu.

XL wireless connection issues

We believe we have restored wireless connection to the east side of the Xavier-Loyola residence hall affected by recent downtime. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused. If you continue to have issues please contact the RUCS Helpdesk at (816) 501-4357.

Increased password complexity requirements

Effective 1/22/08, we have changed our network account password complexity requirements. These changes will be enforced the next time that you are prompted to change your password.

Future passwords must be:

  • at least 8 characters long
  • contain at least one uppercase character
  • contain at least one lowercase character
  • contain at least one number
  • The password may not contain three or more characters from the user’s first and last name.
Example: If your name was Michael your password could not include the word Chime because C H I M and E  are in your name but could include the word Hawk because that word only has H and A from Michael.

By making your passwords more complex you are helping to make your password more secure. It is good password policy to not write down your passwords or leave them on your desk. You should never give your password to anyone else. Doing so will violate the Computer Usage Policy.

If you forget your password or your account becomes locked out, please contact the Computer Services Help Desk at 816-501-4357.
