Improve Reliability of Residence Hall Network

Project Manager: Michael Stanclift, Network Analyst
Completion Date: Fall 2009
Summary: Replaced all network equipment, including access points, media converters and switches, in McGee, Corcoran and THV residence halls. XL was completed in Summer 2008.

Current plans include consolidating unused switches and cleaning up communication closets to aid in troubleshooting. We also intend to double the amount of wireless access points in each area (including XL) as well as add additional access points to areas where there is currently no wireless coverage, such as the THV Community Center.

With the assistance of Physical Plant, plan to reduce the amount of fiber "hops" to reach Corcoran Hall and THV areas. This should increase network connection speed and efficency. We also plan to refurbish fiber connections between building in THV to decrease complexity and increase speed and efficency.

We will also upgrade firmware for all existing switches/AP and deploy network monitoring and alerting software to notify RUCS of downed or failing equipment.
